Karen Slater, Manager, ENSC

Karen Slater joined our team on May 2, 2019. Karen comes to us with a wealth of experience working in the area of physical activity, sport, and recreation. She is an experienced administrator and community leader with over fifteen years of experience. For the past eight years, Karen served as the Executive Director at The Steadward Centre for Personal & Physical Achievement at The University of Alberta. In this role, she oversaw the daily operations of the Adapted Physical Activity and Parasport centre. Providing leadership on a variety of local, regional and provincial initiatives. In addition to her role at the University of Alberta, she has served in a variety of capacities with non-profit organizations—from Executive Director, Community League Board Member, Program Coordinator, International Research Assistant and Volunteer. 

Over the past several years, she has enjoyed being a member of the Edmonton Nordic Ski Club, participating in adult ski lessons, and the learn to loppet program—skiing her first Birkie (31K) in 2015. She is a proud Jackrabbit mom, with her 3.5-year-old bunny enjoying his Sunday skis this past winter.

Karen will provide management, coordination and administrative support for the daily operations of our Club. This position is part-time, providing twenty hours of support each week. In her role as Manager, she will be responsible for coordinating the day to day operations of the Club. She is committed to:

• Providing coordination, administration and support to the head coach, committees, volunteers and membership on an ongoing basis.

• Communicating to the board of directors about the monthly activities, opportunities and challenges that arise. 

• Working with the community and membership to recruit volunteers for committee and club level positions.

• Ensuring an annual operation plan is in place that supports the overall strategic direction of the Club. 

In these early months of the position, Karen will be working to further her understanding of the Club, by meeting with committee members and volunteers. 

As the ENSC Board, we are committed to carrying out our mission “to promote and support Biathlon and Cross-Country Skiing by providing programs and facilities for the capital region.” Please join me in welcoming Karen to this new role.
